YELLOW CARD: Newcastle 1-0 Spurs (Maddison)
Now that is what you call a blatant yellow card.
James Maddison flies in recklessly to halt a Newcastle counter and is booked for it.
He can have no complaints there.
CHANCE! Newcastle 1-1 Spurs
That’s more like it from Newcastle.
The support is already working wonders as the home side launch a rare attack in this half.
Anthony Gordon drives into the box, plays a lovely back hell for Jacob Murphy to run onto, and then the winger aims for the near post.
Vicario is equal to the shot and beats it away.
Newcastle 1-1 Spurs
The Newcastle fans are trying to help their team by making some noise.
The Magpies really need it, they can barely get out of their own half, Tottenham are all over them.
A far cry from the last two installments of this fixture.
SUBSTITUTION: Newcastle 1-1 Spurs
Eddie Howe blinks first.
Goalscorer Harvey Barnes will not see out the rest of the match, his work is done.
Jacob Murphy, who he replaced in the starting 11, comes into the action.
CLOSE! Newcastle 1-1 Spurs
It’s not James Maddison, it’s Pedro Porro… and it’s over the bar.
The full-back really fancies it and takes a huge run-up before unleashing a powerful effort.
It was always going over, though.
Newcastle 1-1 Spurs
Newcastle are all over the place.
Tottenham are continuing to apply the pressure and now James Maddison has won a free-kick in a dangerous position.
I think Maddison will want this himself…
Goal:Newcastle 1-1 Spurs (Burn OG 56′)
A gift for Tottenham!
The visitors have been knocking on the door and now they are level courtesy of a Dan Burn own goal.
Nick Pope fails to deal with a strike from distance and Brenn Johnson reacts to send a ball across the six-yard box.
There are no Spurs men there but Burn hoofs the ball into his own net as he tries to clear.
Disastrous.
BIG MISS! Newcastle 1-0 Spurs
How are Tottenham not level?
The visitors are all over Newcastle and I have no idea how Wilson Odobert has not found the back of the net.
Brennan Johnson curls the ball to the back stick and Odobert just needs to head it into the net.
But he tries to knee it in and it goes wide.
Who else?
William Pickworth, Mail Sport, at Stamford Bridge:
As Eze shifted the ball onto his right foot, there was only one outcome as he curled it right into the top corner and past a helpless Robert Sanchez. Who else!? What a player! The Palace fans are bouncing up and down.
Goal:Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace (Eze 53′)
That is sensational!
Eberechi Eze can do special things and he has just produced one of those moments to pull Crystal Palace level.
The ball bounces to him on the edge of the box and he nonchalantly bends the ball in off the post.
A superb finish.
YELLOW CARD: Newcastle 1-0 Spurs (Bissouma)
This second half has been fast and furious, so far.
Tottenham should be level but Wilson Odobert fails to get on the end of Brennan Johnson’s low cross to turn home.
Yves Bissouma then tries to stop a Newcastle counter-attack and pays the price with a booking.
BIG TACKLE! Newcastle 1-0 Spurs
What a tackle that is from Radu Dragusin!
Alexander Isak is away down the right and races into the box, you just expect a goal to come.
But the Tottenham defender saves the day as he gets back to slide in and take the ball away from him.
A huge moment in the match.
SECOND HALF: Newcastle 1-0 Spurs
Brennan Johnson is indeed now into the action.
he replaces Pape Sarr, who was on a yellow card, and there will be a formation switch.
Anyway, we are back underway.
SECOND HALF: Chelsea 1-0 Crystal Palace
That break went very quickly, didn’t it?
The ball is rolling once more at Stamford Bridge with the sun shining on the stadium.
Can we expect any shocks in this half?
Johnson ready to go
It looks like there will be a change at half-time for Tottenham.
Brennan Johnson is in full kit and going through an intense warm-up on the pitch.
Who will he replace?
How may I assist you?
Cole Palmer ain’t just a goalscorer, he’s a provider.
The Chelsea forward bagged three assists last week and has added another to his collection today.
His four assists in Chelsea’s three Premier League games this season has only been bettered by four players, in the past, in a team’s first three matches of a Premier League campaign.
Two of those are Harry Kane and Paul Pogba, not bad company, eh?
Also, Palmer has now assisted 15 goals in the Premier League for Chelsea; the most of any player across Europe’s big five leagues since his debut.
WATCH: Barnes fires Newcastle ahead
If you haven’t seen how Newcastle took the lead, then here you go.
I mean, it really did come out of nowhere, but it doesn’t take away from how nice of a goal it is.
Newcastle are brilliant on the transition and they punished Spurs in the blink of an eye. A lovely cross, and a great finish.
Not a bad celebration, either.
‘Entertaining half’
William Pickworth, Mail Sport, at Stamford Bridge:
A very entertaining half of football. Chelsea have been good and deserve their lead, but Palace have played some nice stuff at times and managed to cut through the Blues’ press.
There’s been a lack of final quality so far, while Chelsea’s attacking players are linking up really nicely. Maresca will be desperate for his side to get that second though.
HALF-TIME: Newcastle 1-0 Spurs
Newcastle lead at the break.
It’s not by the margins they have been used to over the past few years, but Harvey Barnes’ strike is enough to have the Magpies in front.
The hosts started strongly but were outplayed for large pasts by Tottenham – the visitors just didn’t take their chances.
Still all to play for.
HALF-TIME: Chelsea 1-0 Crystal Palace
The first half comes to an end at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have looked well worth their lead and they have it thanks to Nicolas Jackson.
The Blues have played some lovely stuff and could maybe be two or three to good on another day.
But as it stands, the game is still in the balance.
YELLOW CARD: Newcastle 1-0 Spurs (Joelinton)
The most predictable booking of the match so far…
Joelinton gets a yellow card for the second game running for wellying Radu Dragusin.
Not quite the close line from last week, but not great.
FIVE added minutes
I’m pretty sure all of these five minutes have come from the linesman’s injury.
Can any of them be used to affect by Newcastle or Tottenham?
YELLOW CARD: Newcastle 1-0 Spurs (Longstaff)
Sean Longstaff goes into the book, and he is not a happy bunny.
In my opinion, he has no complaints. It was a naughty challenge, he went through the back of a Spurs midfielder.
‘Out of nowhere’
Aadam Patel, Mail Sport, at St James’ Park:
After the stoppage, Newcastle looked to be on the back foot but that goal has woken the place up again. It’s come out of nowhere but it’s a wonderful finish by Harvey Barnes.
Newcastle 1-0 Spurs
I was getting worried we would get a stalemate the way the game was going, which would have made me look silly…
But Harvey Barnes has ensured that the streak of goals in this fixture continues, and it was a lovely one at that.
Goal:Newcastle 1-0 Spurs (Barnes 37′)
Out of the blue, Newcastle lead!
The Magpies have been under the cosh but just like that Harvey Barnes has given them the lead.
He gets on the end of Lloyd Kelly’s cross on the left and simply passes it into the far corner.
Eddie Howe said Barnes deserved to start and he has just shown why.
YELLOW CARD: Newcastle 0-0 Spurs (Sarr)
We have our first yellow card of the game.
It has been shown the way of Tottenham’s Pape Sarr for a nasty challenge on Lloyd Kelly.
I mean, it’s a really late one. With more force, that card may have been a different colour.
Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
There is a roar from St James’ Park as Newcastle finally get up the pitch.
They have been penned back in their own box for the past few minutes as Tottenham gain control of this match.
But now they have a bit of respite.
‘Scintillating break from Chelsea’
William Pickworth, Mail Sport, at Stamford Bridge:
A scintillating break from Chelsea for that goal. Colwill stepped in to beat Mateta to the ball, before he fed in Madueke who burst away from Hughes. He showed great composure to tee up Palmer who squared for Jackson to tap home. After all the chat about Chelsea needing a new frontman, Jackson hasn’t started the season badly at all.
‘Newcastle off it again’
Craig Hope, Mail Sport, at St James’ Park:
After a good start, NUFC have come off it again. Same pattern as previous two games. Spurs in control of ball at present & looking dangerous.
Goal:Chelsea 1-0 Crystal Palace (Jackson 25′)
That’s how to celebrate a new contract!
Chelsea have been on top and you just felt a goal was going to come, and now it has.
Nicolas Jackson is on hand to tap home Cole Palmer’s lovely pass to put the Blues a goal to the good.
That was Chelsea at their best.
‘Madueke should score’
William Pickworth, Mail Sport, at Stamford Bridge:
Madueke should really have put his side 1-0 up here.
BIG CHANCE! Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace
Noni Madueke, you have to score there!
Chelsea really should be 1-0 up as the winger is just six yards from goal, you just expect him to score.
But he somehow fires wide, I can’t believe it. I was uncertain that was going to hit the back of the net.
CHANCE! Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
Lovely football from Tottenham.
They work the ball beautifully from left to right and beat the Newcastle press.
James Maddison then spots Wilson Odobert on his bike and finds him with a lovely through ball.
The teenager is away but blasts an effort over the bar.
Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
The new linesman is doing a few knee-ups to warm up, we don’t want him pulling a muscle too.
If that happens, someone from the crowd may need to be called to help…
I mean, that would be funny.
Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
Ahhhh, the assistant referee has pulled his quad.
The fourth official is now taking to the line and the linesman is taking up the other position.
Sometimes you forget how much running the officials do, injuries do happen.
Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
I think Tottenham will be happy with how they have started this game.
17 minutes in and they are yet to concede. They have weathered the early Newcastle storm and are settling down.
And just as I type this, play is stopped due to an issue with the assistant referee.
I think he may be injured, but am not quite sure.
CLOSE! Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace
So close from Cole Palmer!
He is in miles of space outside the area, gets himself set, and aims for the far corner.
The forward bends the ball beautifully but it flies just wide of the post, and he can’t believe it.
To be fair to him, I thought it was heading in too.
DISALLOWED GOAL!
Tottenham think they have taken the lead… but the flag is up.
The visitors work the corner well and the ball is whipped into the back post for Cristian Romero to head home.
But the defender is miles offside, it’s not even close. He is in a different postcode.
‘Palace fand in fine voice’
William Pickworth, Mail Sport, at Stamford Bridge:
The Palace fans are in fine voice in a packed out away end, no doubt delighted that they were able to hold on to Marc Guehi despite serious interest from Newcastle throughout the summer.
They are also booing Marc Cucurella every time he touches the ball, most likely due to his past as a Brighton player, although the Spaniard is fast-becoming a pantomime villain in the Premier League this season.
CLOSE! Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
Newcastle are all over Tottenham at the moment.
They go close once again and this time through Harvey Barnes, who has had a brilliant start to this match.
He drives toward the area on the break and just decides to have a crack. He hits it with venom but it flies inches wide of the post.
Another close call for the visitors.
Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
St James’ Park is absolutely bouncing.
Every time Newcastle press forward there is a deafening roar from the home crowd, it’s so loud.
No wonder Tottenham always struggle here.
‘Isak meant that’
Aadam Patel, Mail Sport, at St James’ Park:
Alexander Isak definitely meant that. It’s a ridiculous effort and he’s desperately unlucky.
OFF THE BAR! Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
That is so nearly a stunner from Alexander Isak!
The striker dispossesses Son Heung-Min by the byline and then tries to chip Vicario from miles out.
It beats the keeper but doesn’t dip soon enough and comes back off the bar. Incredible.
Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
That’s why Harvey Barnes has been selected.
The winger is already causing problems down the left-hand side and he nearly races past Radu Dragusin, but the defender slides in at a critical time.
A brights start from the hosts.
Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
Sandro Tonali may not be starting today, but his return to a Premier League squad has delighted the Newcastle faithful.
Plenty of banners in the crowd are in support of the Italian and this one below is my favourite by a mile.
KICK-OFF: Newcastle 0-0 Spurs
The rubbish Premier League anthem comes to an end, the teams huddle, and then there is a monster roar from the crowd.
The referee blows the whistle and away we go at St James’ Park.
Let’s get ready for goals!
KICK-OFF: Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace
We are underway at Stamford Bridge.
Just before the whistle is blown, Jadon Sancho was presented to the crowd and there was a warm reception.
He is now back in the stands and the action is underway.
‘Expecting goals’
Aadam Patel, Mail Sport, at St James’ Park:
Just the 16 goals in the last three clashes between these two so yeah, we’re expecting goals in this one. You have to go back to 1915 for the last goalless between Newcastle and Spurs.
‘A good test for Maresca’s men’
William Pickworth, Mail Sport, at Stamford Bridge:
Good Afternoon from a hot Stamford Bridge. It feels like a big day for Enzo Maresca’s side after a hectic end to the window. Deadline day saw Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja, and Trevoh Chalobah depart on loan, while Jadon Sancho – who has just been presented to the home crowd – arrived for a season with an obligation to buy.
The Blues thumped Wolves 6-2 last week and played some stunning attacking football, although they did look a little shaky at the back. It promises to be a good test for Maresca’s men against a Palace side who have lost both their Premier League games this season but beat Norwich 4-0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
Ready for battle
Football can sometimes be an all-out war, especially when Newcastle hosts Tottenham.
Well, this fan is ready for it.
It might be grey skies in Newcastle, but it is still incredibly warm in the North East. He must be boiling.
Madueke to shine again?
Noni Madueke was on fire last week, wasn’t he?
The winger was given a first Premier League start of the season and my word did he take his opportunity.
A second-half hat-trick away at Wolves drove Chelsea to a 6-2 thumping win in the West Midlands.
He needs to build on that performance with another today if he is to show he is the real deal.
The only problem is, he hasn’t taken aim at the city of London…
I’m guessing that means no goal today then.
Howe: ‘Barnes deserves start’
Eddie Howe, Newcastle boss, speaking to Sky Sports:
We had two contrasting games against Tottenham last season. A new match today we start from zero and we have got to earn everything.
On his team selection:
Harvey [Barnes] deserves to start he has been knocking on the door, I hope he goes well today. There is a temptation [for Tonali to start] as he is a top-quality player. I am always thinking what the team needs, Sandro needs a period to build up his fitness. He is ready to play, but for how long that’s a different question.
‘Barnes shone in the week’
Craig Hope, Mail Sport, at St James’ Park:
After the game down at Bournemouth last week I called for Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon to start together – and that is what Eddie Howe has done here. They are Newcastle’s two best wingers and, while they’d both prefer to play on the left, they are right footed and should be able to be effective from the opposite flank, where Barnes shone during the week.
Kick-off closing in
Kick-off is edging closer, and closer, and Bruno Guimaraes seems very happy about it.
I certainly share his excitement, I can just sense that we are about to witness a very exciting game.
Are you all ready to lock in?
Neville: ‘Howe should be disappointed’
Gary Neville, former Man United defender, on Sky Sports:
Newcastle have been mesaured and I think done a really good job. I would suggest thast Eddie Howe feels disappointed at what’s happened in the last few months.
He should be disappointed, they should have got better players for him and now it’s at that crossroads moment t measuredthathat was always going to come. It’s a very challenging moment they are about to embark upon.
Isak to wreak more havoc?
Alexander Isak is such a star.
In my mind, he is one of the most underrated strikers in the Premier League, I love watching him play.
Do you know who doesn’t, though?
Tottenham. They are sick of the sight of the Swedish striker, he wreaks havoc on them every year.
He netted twice in the 6-1 pasting of them two seasons ago and then did the same last campaign.
They will be hoping he stays quiet today, but it’s hard to see that happening, isn’t it?
No new signing Sancho
Am I the only person that think this photo looks odd?
Seeing Jadon Sancho in the blue of Chelsea will take some time getting used to, that’s for sure.
But we won’t be seeing him don the colours today as he was not registered by the club in time on deadline day.
I’m sure the loanee from Manchester United will be in the stands, though, watching his new teammates.
I bet he will be itching to get on that pitch.
Bad memories
I keep on talking about these memories, don’t I?
I’m sure Tottenham fans do not need reminding of what I am badgering on about, but I will provide it anyway.
Spurs have conceded 10 goals in their last two trips to St James’ Park, scoring just one themselves.
Newcastle have been relentless on both occasions, romping to a 6-1 win during the 2022-23 season, and another 4-0 victory a season later.
Both matches will live long in the memory of both fans for very different reasons. I know that they live in mine.
Surely we won’t get a repeat of them today, will we?
I’m pretty sure that’s what I said last time, though.
Smiley Spurs
Tottenham have arrived at St James’ Park, and they seem in high spirits.
I’m surprised Brennan Johnson looks so relaxed, he probably has very bad memories of this stadium after last year.
Rime to make new ones, I guess…
New contract for Jackson
Kieran Gill, Mail Sport, at Stamford Bridge:
Chelsea didn’t get a striker on deadline day, and their back-up in Marc Guiu is missing from the squad. That leaves Nicolas Jackson as the starter, with Joao Felix and Christopher Nkunku as other options.
Wrote two days ago that Chelsea want to reward Jackson with new contract. News just broke that it’s been agreed – he’ll be tied down until 2033 rather than 2031. Similar to how Cole Palmer was rewarded. Didn’t expect it to be done so quickly, but two parties clearly happy with each other.
Howe: ‘Number of unsettled players’
Eddie Howe, Newcastle boss, speaking on Friday:
If I’m being honest, it [the mood in the dressing room] probably mirrors the narrative created and it’s my job to shape that in the most powerful way that I can. What I mean by that is there’s been a number of unsettled players during this window. It’s not been a clear window for us in terms of just bringing players in. It’s been difficult the other way as well.
So I think once the window shuts (which it now has) we’ll have clarity. The players will have clarity. “Right, we’re all here now together for the same aim”, and then I’d like to think we will all go together until January in the pursuit of excellence and in the pursuit of success.
We have some brilliant characters in the squad and a great changing room, so there is no criticism of the changing room. It’s just it has been unsettling. That’s always difficult when the situation is like that.
Unsettled Newcastle
The Geordies are probably happy to see the back of the transfer window.
They had a really unsettled summer, struggling to get the players in the positions they wanted.
One of those being Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace, who has remained in south London after coming close to a move to St. James’ Park.
Or maybe they wish they had a longer summer, so they could get them.
Either way, the dressing room is not in the best shape as they come into this one, with no new faces through the door on deadline day.
It means no fresh faces are starting for them today…
Crystal Palace Team News – Guehi STARTS
There’s Marc Guehi…
The Crystal Palace captain starts for the Eagles after a whirlwind of a summer where it looked like he might leave.
There are no debuts for the likes of Eddie Nketiah and Trevoh Chalobah due to the timing of their transfers on the deadline.
Chelsea Team News – Neto STARTS
Just one change for Chelsea.
Pedro Neto makes his full Premier League debut for Chelsea as he replaces Mykhailo Mudryk.
Noni Madueke of course keeps his place after netting a hat-trick last week, why wouldn’t he?
Joao Felix has to ait a little longer until he gets his start, he is on the bench.
Spurs Team News – Dragusin STARTS
Radu Dragusin is in at the back for Tottenham.
the defender replaces Micky van de Ven who has been ruled out through injury.
I bet the Dutchman is secretly happy after the nightmare he endured at St. James’ Park last year.
Dejan Kulusevksi is also in to replace Brennan Johnson.
Newcastle Team News – Tonali on BENCH
No… Sandro Tonali does not start.
The Italian midfielder has to settle for a spot on the bench as Eddie Howe practically reverts to the side that started at Bournemouth last week.
That means that Sean Longstaff, Joelinton, and Bruno Guimaraes all line up in the middle of the park.
However, Howe does make one change, with Harvey Barnes getting a start.
Tonali to start?
Sandro Tonali is in the building…
The Italian midfielder made his return to competitive football against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup in midweek, following a 10-month ban due to illegal betting.
I thought he would take a while to bed back into the game after so long out, but my word was I wrong.
Tonali was the Magpies’ best player at the City Ground, it looked like he had never been away.
Will that impressive performance earn him a start today?
London derby time
Every week there is a London derby, I swear.
This time it’s the turn of Chelsea and Crystal Palace to lock horns and they will do so in the west of the city.
The Blues have of course provided entertainment both on and off the pitch over the last month, as they always do.
With plenty of new faces through the door, they looked the bee’s knees last week away at Wolves as they ran rampant, scoring six at Molineux.
But their loss away at Swiss side Servette in midweek kept the club’s renewed optimism in check and showed they still have a long way to go.
Today they face a Palace side who were tipped to do well this season, but they have had a terrible start.
Oliver Glasner’s side have lost their two opening matches, which were also London derbies, to Brentford and West Ham, and they haven’t looked particularly great.
With these two teams, though, I have no idea which way this will go.
Clash of the CL hopefuls
It may only be three games in, but this is a monster clash.
Newcastle and Tottenham will both have the same goals this season and that is to make the top four.
Both have had similar starts to the season. Two games, one win, one draw, and a shaky performance or two were thrown into the mix.
When going for Champions League qualification, teams always want to get one over on their rivals, especially early on.
Newcastle have had major success in this fixture recently, but they can’t go into this one thinking the same will happen again.
Meanwhile, those said results will be lurking in the back of Tottenham players’ minds, but they can’t let it affect them.
It could be a massive mental battle today.
Blockbuster Sunday
We are in for a rollercoaster of a day, people.
There is a reason it is called ‘Super Sunday’, the three matches ahead today epitomise that saying to a tee.
While we are still a fair few hours away from the showstopper at Old Trafford later, we have some tasty appetisers for you to tuck into.
Chelsea will be looking to back up their thumping of Wolves when they face Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge later.
But the fixture I am licking my lips over is Newcastle hosting Tottenham – it always serves up a cracker.
Spurs fans will not be entirely optimistic after that last two trips to St James’ Park, but I guess it’s a new season.
Right then, that’s enough of an introduction, let’s get this show on the road!
