Champions League LIVE: Live Score, Team News And Updates As Liverpool Are Pegged Back At PSV, While Aston Villa Get Off To Flying Start Against Celtic And Arsenal Fall Behind

Follow Mail Sport’s live blog for the latest scores and updates as Liverpool look to progress with a perfect record, plus updates from Girona vs Arsenal and Aston Villa vs Celtic.

‘Perfect night for Villa so far’

By Ian Ladyman At Villa Park

Two goals for Villa from Morgan Rogers and suddenly nobody is talking about Ollie Watkins anymore.

Meanwhile Tyrone Mings – injured at the weekend – has just ambled down the touchline with a big smile on his face. Perfect night so far for Villa.

OFF THE LINE! Aston Villa 1-0 Celtic

By Harry Bamforth

How is it not three?

Ollie Watkins looks set to kill this game off after a lovely move, but his effort is cleared off the line.

The striker was in acres of space after Villa shifted the ball from left to right, but his shot seemed to take an age to roll toward the line before being cleared.

Celtic stay alive.

Goal:Girona 1-0 Arsenal (Danjuma 28′)

By Harry Bamforth

It just had to be him, didn’t it?

Former Tottenham striker Arnaut Danjuma opens the scoring against his former rivals Arsenal.

I mean, it’s pretty much down to a brain fart from Neto.

The debutant comes rushing out of his box to try and clear the ball but Danjuma gets there first and lofts the ball over him.

Nobody saw this coming…

Goal:PSV 0-1 Liverpool (Gakpo pen 28′)

By Harry Bamforth

Now that is how you take a penalty!

Cody Gakpo steps up and lashes the ball into the top corner in style, it’s one hell of a penalty.

He of course chooses not to celebrate, even if his team-mates try to get him to smile.

Liverpool on course for eight wins from eight.

PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL!

By Harry Bamforth

Ohhhhh…

Liverpool have a penalty but if the referee had played in a little longer they may be in the lead.

Federico Chiesa does well to pinch the ball in the PSV box before getting clipped.

He falls to the ground and the referee blows for a penalty, but just as he does so Harvey Elliot whips the ball into the back of the net.

Controversial, or not?

Anyway, Cody Gakpo is going to step up against his former side.

Dortmund move into automatics

By Harry Bamforth

Right, let’s have a cheeky little update from around the grounds, shall we?

I have already told you all that Borussia Dortmund are beating Shakhtar Donetsk, and well, that goal means they are now in the top eight.

Elsewhere, Bologna are springing a shock in Lisbon against Sporting CP while AC Milan are losing to Dinamo Zagreb.

PSG seem to be sailing into the play-offs as well as they have a second away at Stuttgart.

The goals are not relenting in the slightest.

‘Robertson has a future at centre half’

By Lewis Steele At Philips Stadion

Not a lot going on here in Eindhoven, to be honest. Johan Bakayoko for the home team looks exciting, though. He is running at Kostas Tsimikas every time he gets a chance to do so and Andy Robertson, playing at centre half tonight, is being forced to cover.

The Scotland captain could be having a glimpse into the future playing there – if he loses a yard of pace in the coming years, that could be a way to elongate his career.

CLOSE! PSV 0-0 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

Oh, what a goal that would have been!

I said this game had been a bore-fest, well, Joey Veerman nearly brings it to life with a stunning free-kick.

The midfielder whips the ball toward the top corner from 30 yards out and it flies just past the post.

That was so close, it really was.

Carnage in Milan

By Harry Bamforth

Absolutely everything is going Inter Milan’s way at the San Siro.

Lautaro Martinez already has a brace inside 16 minutes and Monaco are down to 10 men.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund are ahead against Shakhtar Donetsk and Benfica lead away at Juventus.

It’s all going on at the moment!

PSV 0-0 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

This has not been the most entertaining of games, I can’t lie.

The goals are flying in absolutely everywhere, but they do not look like going in over in the Netherlands.

This feels like a game that Liverpool don’t care about… because they don’t.

DISALLOWED GOAL! – Arsenal

By Harry Bamforth

What a lovely finish that is from Riccardo Calfiori!

Oh wait, it’s not going to count… he is offside.

Riccardo Calafiori thinks he has scored for the second time in two games with a lovely finish, but the flag goes up straight away.

I mean, I had to double-check whether that was Calafiori because it was a strikers finish at the back post.

It deserved a goal.

‘Great start for Villa’

By Tom Collomosse At Villa Park

Great start for Villa and interesting how they’ve lined up: Kamara at centre-back, the newcomer Lamare Bogarde in midfield alongside Tielemans. What a way this is to calm those choppy waters over Watkins and Duran – two up inside five minutes.

PSG take the lead at Stuttgart

By Harry Bamforth

The goals have been flying in already… I mean, what else would you expect?

We have to start in Germany where Bradley Barcola has just headed PSG in front at Stuttgart.

It’s a huge goal for Les Parisiens that would see them safely into the play-off places as things stand.

Elsehwere, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Lille, and Inter Milan all lead.

Seven goals already.

Goal:Aston Villa 2-0 Celtic (Rogers 5′)

By Harry Bamforth

Two in two minutes!

This is truly unbelievable, Morgan Rogers has a brace inside five minutes at Villa Park.

Rogers picks the ball up from 20 yards out and just decides to have a crack because why not?

It takes the slightest of deflections and wrong foots the keeper before hitting the back of the net.

Crazy, crazy, crazy start.

Goal:Aston Villa 1-0 Celtic (Rogers 3′)

By Harry Bamforth

WHAT A START!

Morgan Rogers takes the roof of Villa Park by getting on the end of a lovely move.

Jacob Ramsey plays a lovely little give-and-go with Youri Tielemans before sliding the ball back to Rogers to swipe home.

Unai Emery could not have wished for a better start.

PSV 0-0 Liverpool

By Harry Bamforth

My word, Liverpool have come out of the traps like a team possessed.

The young Reds are already hinting in packs and have PSV in some sort of daze by their own box.

If they manage to keep these energy levels up, they are in for a good night.

I bet they won’t though.

KICK-OFF!

By Harry Bamforth

Strap yourselves in guys, all 18 matches are now underway.

This is the time when I write about the atmosphere in all of the grounds, but it’s hard to do that for all of them tonight.

Let’s just say all of them are booming because I’m pretty sure they are.

Let’s have it!

Ready for action

By Harry Bamforth

I currently have one of the best seats in the house to watch all of these games.

I am currently in the TNT Sports Studio and have five screens with all of their shows. If I miss a goal, then feel free to have a go at me.

I mean, I really shouldn’t with all of these screens in front of me.

I’m just hoping my eyes don’t hurt after it all, my mother used to tell me I would get square eyes if I sat in front of the television.

Thankfully that’s a myth… I think.

‘Three youngsters among Villa’s subs’

By Tom Collomosse At Villa Park

With Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia ineligible, there are three youngsters among Villa’s outfield subs – Sil Swinkels, Travis Patterson and Kadan Young.

Young and Patterson are the Under-21 players Emery rates most highly along with Swinkels, who may leave on loan before February 3.

Kick-off closing in…

By Harry Bamforth

Guys, it’s nearly time for all of the excitement to begin.

Both Liverpool and PSV have just finished their warm-ups in Eindhoven and it’s nearly go-time.

Going by Kostas Tsimikas’ face, it doesn’t exactly look like he is happy to be there.

Maybe he will fashion a smile if Liverpool win.

‘Atalanta can hold their own’

By Harry Bamforth

James Horncastle, speaking to Mail Sport live from behind-the-scenes at the Goals Show Xtra on TNT Sports:

I think they [Atalanta] can hold their own because Barcelona star quite glitchy. We saw that against Benfica, who went 3-1 up. Benfica should never have lost that game.

This game should be the Goal Show game because I think they are two of the three team with the best attacks. They have all the best attacking numbers. That could be the ultimate goal show game for the ultimate goal show night.

Can Atalanta upset the odds?

By Harry Bamforth

We have already spoken about how Aston Villa need one team above them to have a bad night if they are going to get through.

Well, the team that seems most likely to come into trouble is Atalanta who are away at Barcelona this evening.

That is just about the toughest fixture the Italians could have got at this stage of the competition.

I mean, it could actually be the game of the round.

If Atalanta drop points and Aston Villa win, well, they could easily drop out of the automatic spots.

I’m sure all Villa fans will be keeping an eye on them, but as we know, Atalanta love to upset the apple cart.

Just as Liverpool fans…

‘Would I sell Ollie Watkins?’

By Ian Ladyman At Villa Park

Simple question. Would I sell Ollie Watkins? No I wouldn’t. But football’s finance rules have changed the landscape of the Premier League these days. Can Villa afford to keep both Watkins and Jhon Duran? Let’s see…

Rock solid Gunners

By Harry Bamforth

Arsenal just love clean sheets, don’t they?

Mikel Arteta has built one hell of a backline over the last few years and they just seem to excel in the Champions League.

The Gunners have somehow only conceded just twice in the Champions League group phase this season.

And that’s in seven games…

I mean, good luck Girona. It’s going to take one hell of an effort to find the net tonight.

Reds love life on the road

By Harry Bamforth

Liverpool may have left have of their star players at home tonight, but you still have to see them as favourites at PSV.

I mean, their record in the Champions League in the last few years has been ridiculously good, no matter who is playing. Not only at Anfield, but actually on the road as well.

Liverpool have won 12 of their last 15 away games in the Champions League, losing the other three.

The Reds boast the best win rate on the road in the competition since the 2021-22 campaign.

You’d expect them to add another to their collection tonight.

‘Villa will not want extra two games’

By Harry Bamforth

Karen Carney, speaking to Mail Sport live from behind-the-scenes at the Goals Show Xtra on TNT Sports:

Playing the extra two [play-off] games, you don’t want. Aston Villa will not want those extra two games. That’s another added incentive for a lot of teams to get it done.

Arsenal can have 10 days off. That’s huge. Rest, recovery, and then go again. If you didn’t have that you would have another two games.

Bad omen for Celtic?

By Harry Bamforth

Celtic and Champions League away days are not exactly a match made in heaven, that’s for sure.

I mean, I don’t want to rain on the parade of the Celtic fans who are happy that they are in the play-offs, but history shows they will struggle tonight.

The Scottish side have only won one of their last 21 games away in the Champions League, losing 15 of those.

That sole win came at Anderlecht back in September 2017, when I was a fresh-faced 17-year-old in Sixth Form.

Yep, it’s been a while.

But these are the sorts of runs that have to come to an end at some point, I guess.

‘Liverpool vs Madrid was my favourite’

By Harry Bamforth

Ally McCoist, speaking to Mail Sport live from behind-the-scenes at the Goals Show Xtra on TNT Sports:

I enjoyed Liverpool vs Madrid actually, I thought it was a great game. I just thought Liverpool, I know it was still very early, but I just thought they were really impressive. The whole thing with Kylian Mbappe missing a penalty, it was just great.

Tune in to Matchday 8 of the UEFA Champions League, exclusively live on TNT Sports and discovery+. Find out more here.

What has your favourite game of the tournament been?

By Harry Bamforth

To think this competition started five months ago is quite mental.

I mean, it’s been going so long I feel I have aged at least 10 years, and I am only 24.

Like it or not, this new format has given us entertainment all the way through. We have had some huge matches along the way which have brought some massive shocks.

There have been thrills, spills, and everything you could possibly want, but what game has been your favourite though?

You have 126 to choose from, so no pressure…

‘Money not to be sniffed at’

By Isaan Khan At Estadi Montilivi

Neto gets his Arsenal debut. If he didn’t play tonight, there would have been a chance of not getting a game for the Gunners before his loan spell ended.

Although the north London club have all but got a spot in the last eight, a win tonight would get them a £1.8million bonus — the fee for every win in the league phase. That’s not to be sniffed at.

History-making night

By Harry Bamforth

You know I keep talking about how bonkers tonight is going to be, well there is a reason why.

This is the first time in the history of this competition that 18 matches have been played at the same time on the same night.

Every time I write the figure I find it mental, it’s just hard to get your head around.

There are going to be goals flying in left, right, and centre.

I’m going to need a lie down after all of it, but it’s going to be worth it for the entertainment.

History in the making.

‘A memorable day for Danns’

By Lewis Steele At Philips Stadion

Not a big night for Liverpool in the grand scheme of things but one of the most memorable days of Jayden Danns’ fledgling career. The 19-year-old makes his Champions League debut and will start against PSV Eindhoven in a much-changed Liverpool team.

Danns has impressed coaches in training and this is his chance to prove to them he is not one for the future – but now. James McConnell also starts in midfield, Andy Robertson looks set to play centre back and will captain the side, while Federico Chiesa makes his first start in Europe for the Reds.

Girona Team News – Danjuma STARTS

By Harry Bamforth

Arsenal fans are certainly going to recognise one name in this Girona line-up.

That man is Arnaut Danjuma who used to adorn the strip of the Gunners rivals Tottenham.

Tonight he will be looking to get one over his former enemy.

PSV Team News – NO Perisic

By Harry Bamforth

No, that is not Rafa Benitez in goal for PSV.

It is actually Walter Benitez and he is more than a handy player between the sticks.

There is no Ivan Perisic for PSV of yet as he was not registered for the group phase.

Celtic Team News – Idah STARTS

By Harry Bamforth

There is one big absentee in this side that you will all be able to see.

That’s right, there is no Kyogo Furuhashi who has now been sold to Rennes. A big loss.

Celtic do have their trusted Adam Idah up top though, and Brendan Rodgers will be hoping he brings the goals.

Aston Villa Team News – Watkins STARTS

By Harry Bamforth

So, Ollie Watkins it is.

The debate over who will start up top for Aston Villa tonight as been whirling all week, and now we have our answer.

Jhon Duran has to settle for a place on the bench while Morgan Rogers and Leon Bailey get the nod.

Can this side get the job done for Unai Emery?

Arsenal Team News – Neto STARTS

By Harry Bamforth

I can’t lie, I was wondering if Neto was ever going to get a chance to wear his goalkeeper gloves while on loan at Arsenal.

Well, tonight he gets to dust them off and go in net for the first time as a Gunner.

Mikel Arteta has made seven changes in total from the side that beat Wolves with Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri, Gabriel and Thomas Partey the only survivors.

Still, it’s not exactly a bad side, is it?

Liverpool Team News – Chiesa STARTS

By Harry Bamforth

It’s a big night for Federico Chiesa!

The Italian has not been given many minutes since signing in the summer but tonight he is given a crack at the whip from the very start.

The Italian forms a front three with young Jayden Danns and Cody Gakpo, who is returning to his former home.

It’s a young Liverpool side… will it be good enough to get the win?

Where else should you look?

By Harry Bamforth

Not all of the biggest storylines contain the English sides tonight.

In fact, I can’t lie, the best ones seem to be elsewhere in Europe involving some of the biggest sides.

While not all of you love the new Champions League format, it does mean sides like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and PSG have something to play for this evening.

It’s crazy, but none of those four sides are actually in the automatic qualifying spots, and most of them are not expected to make it.

Meanwhile, dies like Atalanta go to Barcelona tonight knowing that a win will see them sail through to the next round.

It’s going to be a massive night that could spring up some huge shocks.

If you aren’t excited, I just can’t help you.

‘Most of the teams have something to play for’

By Harry Bamforth

Ally McCoist, speaking to Mail Sport live from behind-the-scenes at the Goals Show Xtra on TNT Sports:

I love it! I went into it very open-minded and I have really enjoyed it. Tonight will be the proof in the pudding, I really do. Most of the teams have something to play for.

The hope is that there are goals flying in everywhere, we would need to be really unlucky if there aren’t.

Tune in to Matchday 8 of the UEFA Champions League, exclusively live on TNT Sports and discovery+. Find out more here.

Permutations for English sides

By Harry Bamforth

I’m guessing you all want to know what could happen to the English sides tonight, don’t you?

Well, I have already told you about what’s on the line for Liverpool and it’s basically nothing. They will finish either first or second.

I would then usually talk about Manchester City, but they are in a different blog tonight, If you want to know about them, then click here.

Now I am typing it, I have realised this post should really be about what is on the line for Aston Villa.

Why, you ask?

Well, Arsenal are all but through on 16 points. The only way they can fall out of the top eight is if they are thumped away at Girona and other results go against them.

Pretty unlikely, isn’t it?

So, without further ado, let’s talk about Villa. They are guaranteed a play-off place at the very least and a win over Celtic would give them a good chance of qualifying automatically for the top eight.

However, they do need one of the teams in those top eight positions to slip up. It’s not all down to them.

Does that all make sense?

I hope it does because otherwise, you are all going to be a very confused bunch this evening.

Can Reds end on top of pile?

By Harry Bamforth

Right, let’s start in Eindhoven then.

Liverpool are one of the few teams who come into tonight with either little on the line, or nothing altogether.

The Reds are top of the Champions League having won all seven of their fixtures thus far, and they need just a point to secure top spot.

I mean, whether they finish first or second doesn’t really matter in the scheme of things, but they will still want to keep up their perfect record.

Arne Slot has taken a rather weak squad to the Netherlands, giving stars like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold a nice little rest.

However, Cody Gakpo is with the team as he looks to face his former side PSV for the first time since leaving the club in December 2022.

Can he mark his return with a goal? I guess we will see…

What’s in store

By Harry Bamforth

To say the menu is tasty does not do it justice in the slightest.

I mean, every single team is involved tonight so that part should be easy, but still, I’ll give you a little run-through.

Here is the full menu:

  • Aston Villa vs Celtic
  • Barcelona vs Atalanta
  • Bayern Munich vs Slovan Bratislava
  • Brest vs Real Madrid
  • Dinamo Zagreb vs AC Milan
  • Borussia Dortmund vs Shakhtar Donetsk
  • Girona vs Arsenal
  • Inter vs Monaco
  • Juventus vs Benfica
  • Bayer Leverkusen vs Sparta Prague
  • Lille vs Feyenoord
  • Manchester City vs Club Brugge
  • PSV vs Liverpool
  • Salzburg vs Atletico Madrid
  • Sporting CP vs Bologna
  • Sturm Graz vs RB Leipzig
  • Stuttgart vs PSG
  • Young Boys vs Red Star Belgrade

Ready for chaos?

By Harry Bamforth

Right guys, we all need to take a big breath… it’s going to be a bonkers night.

Never before have we seen 18 Champions League matches in one night. It’s simply bananas.

This blog may be led on Liverpool’s game with PSV, but I am telling you for certain that our eyes are going to be everywhere tonight.

It’s just going to be one of those crazy nights of football and I simply can’t wait for it.

Pretty much every single game tonight has something on the line, the table is going to be chopping and changing all the time.

While I’m excited, I can’t lie I am also a little bit scared… we have never seen this many games on at one time.

It’s all going to be a bit of fun though, right?

Anyway, this night does not really need much of an introduction, it’s the last group phase night. That should be enough to get everybody pumped.

So, with that being said, let’s get this show on the road!
